Check the exchange rates as some US banks offer the best conversions. If you bring dollars make sure they are in perfect conditions or they won’t be accepted. ATM’s typically charge $7.50 and always select the, “continue without conversion choice” so you won’t be charged extra. There are ATM’s and banks everywhere so don’t sweat it. Credit cards are accepted but charge 3% at many locations. If you get 2%-3% cash back it’s recommended but you will always need Thai Baht for the small stuff like food stalls. We will assist if needed.
Comfortable broken in walking sneakers are recommended because if you are not walking a lot you are missing out. Sandals are great for the heat and to quickly remove as you must remove your shoes at many shops and all temples. You can buy cheap sandals in Thailand for as little as $2-$3. The malls have sketchers, New Balance…etc for about the standard price. Socks are cute and dirt cheap for women. The men’s socks rarely come in larger sizes and are poor quality.
Our operating season from Oct-Feb will most likely not see rain. Just the same shops sell disposable rain covers that work great for $2-$4. You can also purchase better quality tops and bottoms for cheap.
Yes, the cops will ticket you in the cities. You may need one to rent at some places. Get one for cheap at the AAA club even if you are not a member. They can even post-date it since they are only good for one year. Additionally they may be purchased online.
Thai pharmacies are great. In the cities they speak English and are well trained at the universities. You can find most everything you need but keep in mind you may need to visit a hospital for the stronger stuff. That being said, or written, you will laugh when you see how cheap the visit is even when you don’t have Thai insurance. I paid only $20 for one-hundred diazepam! If you bring meds keep them in their proper packaging. Thailand has not checked me in 12 years but you may get them confiscated at US Customs upon return.
Bring comfortable jeans, sweat pants and some microfiber pants, shorts, T-shirts, and a sweater. You will find decent T-shirts for as little as $3 each everywhere. Some bootleg name-brands about the same quality (since they are also from China) for a good price. I would recommend traveling light and buy clothes in Thailand if you have a little extra time. Jackets and jeans as well are good quality and often inexpensive. Tailor shops are cheap and fast…Bring anything that does not fit well or needs mending including new zippers. We will even take care of that for you.
Yes, Dove, Pantene, Crest, Colgate and hygiene products…etc. Don’t kill yourself dragging big bottles around the world.
Yes.
Dress modestly. Everything should be covered. Short sleeve shirts are OK for both men and women.
Yes, Thailand is safe compared to all countries. Only be careful of scammers in crowded young tourist areas. We recommend you watch a few videos on YouTube.
It’s considered rude to talk loud or be argumentative in public. Don’t step over people’s legs or feet. Don’t step on the threshold at temple entrances or sit with your feet pointed at monks. You do not have to say bless you when someone sneezes. Expect Thai people to bow a little bit if they must walk between you and your friend or even between you and something you are looking at in the store; this is a sign of respect. Thai people are extremely friendly and will want to toast you and refill your glass over and over if in a restaurant or bar.. Sometimes they stare if you are in a location that does not get tourists. Do not consider it rude, just smile, say hello or even approach them. The worst thing that will happen is they will try to feed you, get drunk with you, get you to dance at the table if there is music or invite you somewhere.
IF YOU TRAVEL WITH US we will assist you with everything including preparation. In addition we will open the door for you to interact with this wonderful culture at every opportunity like crashing a wedding, graduation, house warming party, company party, bear witness to a child becoming a monk…etc
